Operation Olasiti
Primary School Classrooms Constructed. Now It's Time to Build Olasiti Village a Secondary School.
Before: Original two-classroom structure built in 1957 was crumbling. This building held over 200 students in its two classrooms. About Olasiti VillageOlasiti Village is located about 8 kms from Arusha in northern Tanzania, and has a population of around 12,000. Most of the villagers in Olasiti are subsistence farmers and are unable to support classroom construction because income per household averages the equivalent of only $90 - $100 per year. In Tanzania, and the village of Olasiti, the government provides and pays for a new teacher when a new classroom is constructed. View Operation Olasiti in a larger map |
After: The old classrooms were torn down and new ones were built in their place. The IssueWith only 16 functional classrooms, Olasiti Primary School struggles to accommodate its 1,922 students. Classrooms are overcrowded with class sizes of 100 children, forcing students to take turns standing during class. The village also lacks a Secondary School (equivalent of high school in the United States). Even the brightest and most capable students are unable to continue past a primary education since there is not a Secondary School in or near the village. Our Progress and What's NextAs seen above, we completed construction on two new classrooms for the Primary School. In June 2009, we also delivered school supplies and books. Our focus now is to provide Olasiti village with a Secondary School. The village has managed to build two classrooms from money raised by taxes; however, additional funding is critically needed. |
